About
the area...
The
surrounding towns:
Not far away you
find the peaceful beauty of the town of Povoa e Meadas, close to the
dam with same name, and leisure sports such as fishing and hunting.
From the house
you can see the town of Marvao, dramatically situated on the top of
a rocky mountain. It's a must to visit this historic village and its
old castle. The church on top is converted into a very interesting
archaeological and historic museum.
20 kms away is
the large town Portalegre, with its many shops and restaurants.
There is a scenic route to Portalegre from Castelo de Vide. Follow
the road as if you were going to Marvao (past Sol e Serra), in about
1 km. there is a sign on your right to Carreiras. The road is winding
its way up through the mountains and pine forest with breathtaking
views. From Casseiras there is a sign to Portalegre.
Megalithic
sites:
Menhirs and other
records of early man are to be found throughout the area. Detail and
maps are in the house.
Archaeological
sites:
The most noticeable
roman excavations are at the settlement of Ammaia just outside Portagem.
This site is worth a visit. Bring your walking boots as the excavations
cover a large area. The museum at the site has a great number of collections,
(the most noticeable of which is the glass collection), from the excavations.
You will find details of Ammaia in the house.
